From 3rd to 7th December Imperia will be again a temple of sailing being the venue for the most important winter sailing race in the Mediterranean, with 12 Nations already represented at today entries update.

From 3rd to 7th December the Imperia Winter Regatta is coming back, bringing crews from all the Europe to the chief-town of West Liguria, to sail this world class-event for 470’s and 420’s, redesigned this year with a new and improved look. With the combined effort of Yacht Club Imperia and Assonautica Imperia, and the valuable logistic support of GoImperia, the event landed in the revisited location of Calata Anselmi in Porto Maurizio, the perfect frame in the new touristic harbor, promising a wonderful event of sport with beautiful races in warm waters making Imperia the capital of winter sailing.

News for this 25th edition is the cooperation between Yacht Club Imperia and Assonautica Imperia: “We have decided to join our 30 years of experience with the professional knowledge the Assonautica grew during many years into main event organization field – Biagio Parlatore, chairman of YCIM says – Our IWR reached last year a level where the need of people, tools and knowledge is very high, all energies to be spent in this event to make it even bigger and successful, without compromising the safety of participants and the competition level”. YCIM has found in Assonautica a great partner not only for the IWR: “with all these new sinergies and interactions between – Parlatore outlines – we are considering to bring to Imperia next springtime another important international event, this time for keelboats”.

“The experience we accumulated during 18 editions of Vele d’Epoca make Assonautica Imperia able to organize high quality events – Lucio Carli, chairman of Assonautica Imperia says – for this reason we want to offer support and help to all the Sailing Club in the province here, and fire up the project to promote, develop and increase marine activities and sports bringing it to the success it deserves. For sure we consider IWR as a fundamental event, having also in our Board Luigi Rognoni, one of the founder of this sailing races week. His contribution and effort to the organization is remarkable, to assure IWR into the International Sailing Calendar. Many people, also from very far and from places where is not possible to sail in winter, as the North of Europe, reach Imperia and find how great and enjoyable is sailing on our sea, and we need to be sure that they will continue to do in the future, this is our commitment.”

“IWR is now at the 25th edition and is popular among Sailor from all the World as the most interesting winter event in the Mediterranean – Luigi Rognoni, board member of Assonautica and IWR event manager, says – The time of the year is favorable for both who considers IWR as the end of the season (especially for 470 classes, being one of the last races giving point for the World Sailing ISAF Ranking) and who considers it the first race of the new season (for the 420 classes it’s the very first opportunity to compete in a top-level race after the fall break). Also this year the Race Course will be in front of the town and, depending on the wind conditions, will be on the East side or on the West side of the main pier of Porto Maurizio harbour.”

Final dates for IWR 2014 are confirmed as 3rd to 7th December. Today update (two weeks before the starts) entries are above 140 boats, coming from 12 different Nations (Austria, Germany, Ukraine, Switzerland, Turkey, Spain, Italy, France, Finland, Greece, The Netherlands, Slovenia), confirming another time IWR it a successful event, supported by the nice weather and warm temperatures of our zones that allows great winter sailing.

The event is open to 420 classes (Open and Female) and to 470 Classes (Men and Women). Races will be sailed in front of the town of Imperia and will be managed by a 100% Italian Race Committe directed by Carlo Tosi and by an International Jury with members coming from Austria, Germany, France and Italy. IWR is a ISAF World Ranking graded event for the 470 class.

The first race is expected at 11.00 am on December 4th. Race dates are:

4th-7th December 2014, races for 470 classes (Men and Women)

5th-7th December 2014, races for 420 classes (Open and Female)


IWR is organized by Yacht Club Imperia in partnership with Assonautica Imperia and the cooperation of GoImperia, the Town of Imperia/Culture and Event Department, Coast Guard of Imperia, Region of Liguria Administration/Sport Department.

The Circolo Velico Imperiese had been founded in 1946 and never stopped to promote sailing activities in the town. In 2006 changes name into Yacht Club Imperia, becoming one of the most active sailing club, with one of the strongest and most popular sailing school in Italy, and with a remarkable palmares of results gained by its athlets, and organizing many important event and other sport-social activities as the sailing school for blind people (Homerus project).

Assonautica Imperia is an association supported by the Chamber of Commerce that develop and promote marine and sea activities, focusing on increase the value of these opportunities in the Province of Imperia. The main event directly organized by Assonautica Imperia is “Vele d’Epoca di Imperia”, included in the “Panerai Classic Yacht Challenge”, one of the most important event for Vintage yachts in the Mediterranean ( Also Assonautica Imperia is cooperating with the Yacht Club and Sailing Club in the Province.

GoImperia is a company owned by the Town of Imperia that manages also the touristic marina in Porto Maurizio and the big boat mooring in the port of Oneglia. Now at its first year of activity, GoImperia engages in the development of all sports and sailing events inside the marina, giving the necessary logistic support.
